Weekend at Bernie’s: When Does Power Let Go?

Y’all remember Weekend at Bernie’s?

Two employees spend an entire movie trying to convince everyone that their very dead boss is still participating in the weekend. Through sunglasses, strategic positioning, and the confidence of people who have committed entirely too hard to a bad idea, they somehow keep everything moving.

The internet has made its own Weekend at Bernie’s jokes about Senator Mitch McConnell. But Episode 4 of Read the Mood does not diagnose him, declare him unfit, or make his health the punchline. The joke simply opens the door to a much larger question:

What happens when the public begins questioning whether an elected official can still serve effectively, but there is no automatic mechanism that removes that person from office?

That question is not really about one politician. It is about power, tenure, representation, institutional memory, succession, and the difference between believing someone should leave and understanding who has the legal authority to make that happen.

That is why the official Reading Mood™ for this episode is Feed My Mind.
