When truth teller and careful writer bell hooks offers a book, I like to be standing at the bookshop when it opens." -Maya Angelou
Intimate, revealing, provocative, Communion challenges every woman to courageously claim the search for love as the heroic journey we must all choose to be truly free. In her trademark commanding and lucid language, hooks explores the ways ideas about women and love were changed by the feminist movement, by women's full participation in the workforce, and by the culture of self-help, and reveals how women of all ages can bring love into every aspect of their lives, for all the years of their lives.
Communion is the heart-to-heart talk every woman -- mother, daughter, friend, and lover -- needs to have.
Bell Hooks
bell hooks (1952–2021), born Gloria Jean Watkins, was an influential American author, feminist theorist, cultural critic, educator, and social activist whose groundbreaking work transformed conversations about race, gender, class, love, and social justice. Writing under a pen name styled in lowercase to emphasize the importance of her ideas rather than her identity, hooks challenged systems of oppression while advocating for education, critical thinking, compassion, and meaningful social change. Her work centered the experiences of Black women and examined how racism, sexism, and economic inequality intersect to shape individual lives and society.
Throughout her career, hooks authored more than 30 books, including *Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism*, *Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center*, *All About Love: New Visions*, *Communion: The Female Search for Love*, *The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love*, *Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom*, and *Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery*. Her writing explored Black feminist thought, emotional healing, education, relationships, masculinity, and the transformative power of love. In *All About Love*, she challenged conventional understandings of love, presenting it as an intentional practice rooted in care, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Beyond her writing, hooks taught at several institutions and helped establish the bell hooks Institute at Berea College.
