"In Why Solange Matters, Stephanie Phillips chronicles the creative journey of an artist who became a beloved voice for the Black Lives Matter generation. A Black feminist punk musician herself, Phillips addresses not only the unpredictable trajectory of Solange's career, but also how she and other Black women see themselves through the musician's repertoire. First, she traces Solange's progress through an inflexible industry, charting the artist's development up to 2016, when the release of her third album, A Seat at the Table, redefined her career. Then, with A Seat at the Table and 2019's When I Get Home, Phillips describes how Solange embraced activism, anger, Black womanhood, and intergenerational trauma, to inform her remarkable art. Why Solange Matters not only cements the place of its subject in the pantheon of world-changing twenty-first century musicians; it introduces its writer as an important new voice"--

Stephanie Phillips

Stephanie Phillips is a British musician, writer, and cultural commentator known for her work exploring Black women's contributions to music, feminism, creativity, and contemporary culture. As a guitarist and vocalist in the Black feminist punk band Big Joanie, Phillips brings the perspective of both a practicing musician and a cultural critic to her writing. Her work examines how race, gender, artistic independence, and representation shape the music industry and the experiences of Black women within it.

Phillips is the author of *Why Solange Matters*, part of the acclaimed *Music Matters* series published by University of Texas Press. The book explores the artistic significance of singer, songwriter, and visual artist Solange Knowles, examining her contributions to contemporary music, Black feminist thought, and cultural expression. Through discussions of Solange's musical evolution, creative independence, and influential projects, Phillips considers how her artistry challenges conventional expectations of Black women in entertainment and creates space for new forms of storytelling and self-definition.

For readers interested in music criticism that goes beyond celebrity and commercial success, Phillips offers an insightful exploration of artistry, identity, and cultural influence. Her work is especially suited to readers drawn to Black music history, contemporary R&B, feminism, cultural studies, creative expression, and books that celebrate the lasting impact of Black women on music and popular culture.
